I am writing this post with mixed emotions. Saturday night at 8pm, March 8, 2015 was my last nursing session with our son, Brody.
Clint helped me make the decision late Saturday night. It was time for me and Brody. 19 wonderful month of Brody's life I have nursed him and loved the special bond we have. He is a mama's boy and I hope he stays that way (well until he gets married and then it is his wife's heart that is his).
Sunday morning. Clint went to get him when he woke up and I stayed out of sight getting ready for church. Usually feeding him is the first thing we do every day, so keeping him distracted was key. We have been introducing him to almond milk, so Clint gave him that and some organic cereal to munch on.
Giving him and Ava a bath before church also helped to distract, since they LOVE baths.
He 9/10 wants to nurse about 9:45am during church service and asked to yesterday and I kept telling him no and Clint again distracted him.
We played outside yesterday afternoon in the 60 degree weather and he napped during our small group. He asked a few more times, but I would just say "no, all done" and he would whimper and then be ok.
We got home and I started cleaning. I clean when I am upset. So I cleaned the house, to try not to think that the dreaded change in bedtime routine that was about to happen. I avoided sending him to bed until the last possible minute. I gave him kisses and hugs and he looked at me like he knew something was about to happen. My heart broke. I gave one last hug, went to our bedroom and cried. And cried. Ava found me in the bathroom peeing.....and crying. She asked what was wrong and gave me a hug (still on the toilet might I add haha). I told her that I was sad because I wasn't feeding Brody anymore because he's a bog boy. I also told her I was sad and cried when I stopped feeding her. She seemed to understand and asked to cuddle in the bed until it was time for her to go to bed. Ahhh yes please!
Clint would leave the room. Brody would cry. I would cry harder. He would go check on him and then leave. Brody would cry. This went on for about an hour and then he fell asleep. We put Ava to bed and then I went to bed and cried.
My boobs are hurting. They are rock solid. Heavy, like an elephant is sitting on my chest. They will stay this painful for a couple to a few days and then be fine. Your body knows when it is time. I could pump to relieve the pressure, but that prolongs the process in my mind. Go big or go home.
I am sad today. This post is hard to write without sobbing. I probably will be sad for a few days "mourning" the loss of nursing my kids. Lord, willing we are done having kids, so this was my last time to have that special connection with them. Brody and I will grow a different bond to replace this one. Ava and I did. It is a part of the growing process and the first major strings to release from them. (I could totally be Beverly Goldberg, from the ABC tv show!)
I love my kids and would do anything for them, even let them go to grow into the people God wants them to be. It is hard and literally painful right now, but change is hard. If we don't adapt and change, we die!
This world may be full of ups and downs, but with God, family, happiness, and health, it is such a great ride!

Big step
Well, this past weekend was a first. It all started out as normal. Great workout at the gym. Lunch. Lounge. And then.....
We packed Brody and Ava's things for a night at my parent's house! Yep, big step. Ava's first night away was when Brody was born (3 years old). Brody's first time was Saturday (19 month).
We had planned to take our first ever weekend away from the kids this past weekend and go to Tunica. It was some where neither one of us have been to and it was only about 4 hours away, but our heating/ac unit finally went to the Big units in the sky. I felt kind of bad going to spend money and gamble when we just dropped a chunk of money on a new unit.
We will go probably on our anniversary in April now.
Any way, back to this mama relinquishing the reigns.....for 12 hours. haha
We got them all packed. Ava was super excited and had their whole night planned. My sister still lives with my parent's and she was excited to.
Ava requested pizza for supper and chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast the next morning. Smart girl. Brody is still nursing 2 times a day and I was curious if this break would be the final whoorah for us. We dropped them off....quickly so I wouldn't think about it too much and off we went.
Clint and I went to Opry Mills Mall. Side note...we walked 2 miles around the mall on our date! (Thanks Fitbit) We went to a restaurant called Claim Jumper. Ordered adult beverages and talked. I really like my husband. He is funny and sarcastic and we really do understand each other and am ok with that haha!
We stopped on the way home and got me a bottle of Reisling and him some Crown Royal Apple for him. (that stuff has a whopper of a kick)
And then we did what all exciting parents do with a night without kids......we caught up on our DVR and I went to bed and he played his game on the Playstation 3. Exciting!!!!!
I was able to sleep a little longer and get up and run an uninterrupted 4.5 miles on the treadmill before church. Winning!
Good for my heart, my parents brought them to church the next morning, so it was a whopping 14 hours away from them, but we were all so excited to see each other!!
I can survive a night without the kids. Did Brody stop nursing????? No. Nothing changed. I am going to have to research how to wean this kid. I will never regret nursing either of my kids. (Ava 16 months and Brody is going on 19 months) But I am ready to let that part of my life go. My stubborn and adorable son isn't quite ready yet. We will see I guess!
Have a great day!!

Weekend: sickness and shopping
This weekend was full of highs and lows. Woke up and had some breakfast, then decided I would do 8 miles on the treadmill. 8 miles were done!! I love good long runs, but not too long.
While I was running Clint was down in the garage working out. After, we got ready and headed out to do a little shopping.
Toys R Us-just looked. Ava was napping so we were able to scope out Christmas presents.
Gas

Toys R Us-just looked. Ava was napping so we were able to scope out Christmas presents.
Gas
Khols- got some "under clothes" for myself, 2 boxes of Vue k cups. That's right we got a Keurig Vue an it's pretty much the best thing EVER!! Clint looked for some tennis shoes, but didn't find any. I have been on him about getting new ones. Let's be honest his suck!
She is carrying my "under clothes". She is so funny!!
KMart-just looked around
Shoe carnival-just looked. They are a little too pricey!
TJMAXX- looked around
We went home and made some tuna and juiced some fruit for lunch (yum). I was starting to feel kinda yucky, but I needed to pick up the clothes from the consignment sale that didn't sell. I was determined after that to come home and put on my pj's and rest the rest of the day. That is what I did. I put a frozen pizza in the oven for Clint and I had a bagel and some eggs. Ava was asleep my 6:30!
My man hard at work to help keep us healthy!
Carrots, apples, lemon! Yum
Sunday morning, Ava was up and at em at 4:30! Well, she did sleep 10 hours! I got up with her and had breakfast and decided we needed to stay home from church. Ava and I were pretty crummy feeling. We pretty much layed around until about 1:30.
Mid morning nap for Ava.
Clint suggested I run a little to see if that would help me (mad love for this man!) I went with the encouragement and ran 3 miles finish the week at 30 miles. It was an ok run, but I needed that endorphin kick for sure! We needed some fruits and veggies for the week so we went to the local grocery to get some for smoothies! We have decide to start doing these more!! Yay!
We came home and Clint made a smoothie for us to share while I put the ingredients in the bread machine for our weekly loaf of bread.
2 oranges, 1.5 apples, 15 grapes, 1 grapefruit.
This was good, but a smidge tart because of the grapefruit!
Good stuff, mama!
We took off on a family walk. It was great weather, a little warm actually.
We let Ava walk instead of ride in her stroller. She walked about .30 miles and did good. All kids need exercise! Even 2 year olds!
We came home and made supper a little while later, pancakes and eggs! Again, yum! I could eat eggs every day! Wait, I do that already!
We put Ava down for the night and I went to go check on my finished bread. This loaf was a wash! It did not turn out. I have made about 20+ loave and only 2 haven't turned out great. Pretty good odds I'd say! Good thing I had a stash of bread in the freezer! I'll make another loaf tomorrow.
Clint and I settled in for the night with the new season of The Walking Dead and an episode of Revenge. The walking dead is like a train wreck and I can't stop watching it even though I am scared and know I'm going to have nightmares! (they did not disappoint last night! I would wake up and the dream would pick up right where I left it! Has this ever happened to anyone??) Revenge was again a great episode! Who needs to go out to have a date night?! We enjoyed our cuddling on the couch!
This morning has been one of "those" mornings. A case of the Monday's I would say. I woke up a little late workout (I'll blame the nightmares!), I spilled my coffee in the bathroom while I was getting ready (tragedy), I forgot Ava's lunch (good thing I'll be there to monitor her food), and then at work I had a mile long list from my boss and my bracelet broke! Hopefully, I can got to Hobby Lobby (twist my arm) and get some thing to fix it.
I hope you have a great day!
See you soon!

No bug, but worse!
Hey there! Happy Wednesday. Last week I posted about getting a stomach bug late Sunday night. Well, this "bug" is still with me. I have been scouring the internet each and every day to see what in the world could be wrong with me.
EVERY time I eat, about an hour or so after my stomach would have these EXTREMELY painful pains and I could literally tell you where my food was traveling in my intestines. I would get nauseous and get chills during this 4-5 hour process. It was waking me up at night with the same deal, no matter what time I ate before I went to bed.
I thought at first it could be something with gluten. I took that out to see if it was still an issue. Well, still same type of pain. I took out most things and still horrible pain.
I am NOT a doctor or medicine person. I believe that God made the body an amazing thing that heals itself when given the proper environment, i.e. chiropractic adjustments, the right foods, probiotics, vitamins and minerals.
I went from looking in to stomach ulcers, to a parasite, to finally talking to my doctor of choice, my boss and chiropractor. We were both on the case trying to figure this thing out. We came across diverticulitis and I KNEW! It had all of my symptoms point on and made total sense to me.
According to Wikipedia, "Diverticulitis is a common digestive disease particularly found in the large intestine. Diverticulitis develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches (diverticula) on the outside of the colon. Diverticulitis results if one of these diverticula becomes inflamed." Source
Once these pouches are formed they are permanent, so flare ups can happen again.
So what to do??
Flare up diet:
I researched this too and when you are having a flare up, the first few days should be a liquid, super easy to digest diet. (water, tea, jello, popscicles, juicing)
After the intestines have had time to calm down, you slowly add in low fiber foods(pastas, cereals, soft vegetables, potatoes no skin, lean meats and proteins).
The last and long lasting stage is a HIGH fiber diet. This will allow the intestines to not have to work so hard to get things moving.
Now, it is uncommon for people my age to get diverticulitis and it is typically when people have unhealthy diets. I do NOT fit this criteria. But with further research, healthy people do get this and there is no real reason.
So how have I handled this?
Since it took me 8 days to figure this out, Monday's lunch was my last "meal". From then I started liquids, popscicles, I had 2 glasses of juice from a juicing machine, NO EXERCISE, and probiotics. (I DO NOT reccommend this for a long amount of time. It is not a healthy way to live! I can tell my body is starting to get drained.
I am hoping to add in a little bit of solid foods either this afternoon or tomorrow. We shall see how that goes.
Oh and I am gettting a JUICER! So excited. My boss and his family juice religiously and believe in its healing powers. I went over to their house yesterday and got some and I am hooked. I was even able to digest it somewhat easily.
Does any one JUICE??
I had one that had carrots, grapefruit, lemon and oranges and the other was chard, apples, and celery. They both were yummy.
I am praying this flare will be over soon. Even though I am still working and doing my normal routine, when I am not in pain, I want to get back to feeling normal!
Well, there is my woe is me for the day. I hope y'all have a great Hump day. See you soon!

Day 17-2012
Tuesday, my 30th Birthday. I have been struggling the past couple weeks with turning 30. I don't really have a reason for it. I don't "feel" 30, I definitely don't look 30. I wouldn't trade my life for anything! Honestly, I wouldn't, but for me, I feel like I should be better somehow at this age. I can't really explain it. I know for you to understand I would need to, but I can't put it into words.
Today though, people have put things into perspective for me. Clint made me a powerpoint this morning and here are a couple of things from the "presentation". I love this man!
Things you can still do
Run and run as far as you want
Buy a house
Be a wonderful wife
Be the best mama ever
Plan trips
Take care of your Family
Be an example for your sister
And on and on
Things you can't do anymore
Ride the kid rides unless you are with Ava
But the more I think about it not much you can't do
Lifetime goals
What ever goals you still have in life we atleast get to do them together. We get to help each other, push each other, and teach each other. I wouldnt be the place in life I am today without all you do for me!
One of my best friends, made me a card and put a picture of me, Clint and Ava on it and it said, "LOOK WHAT YOU HAVE AT THE AGE OF 30!" My heart dropped and I teared up. They were both right! I am healthy and happy. I have a great husband that I get to spend 30+more years with. A beautiful daughter that keeps me young. A healthy body that was able to do bicep curls today with 25lb DBs and ran 4 miles with no problem. A great new job that will push me and make me feel needed. Family and friends who love me. I couldn't ask for more. So yes, I did turn29 30 today, but it really is a number that I need to embrace and be proud of where I am at this age in my life! I am done feeling sorry for myself that I am in my 30's. I can only get better, right?!
I hope you had a great day!

Overcoming
Yay for Friday people! Whooot whoot! I hope your week has been a good one and your weekend will be even better.
I have posted about Intimidation before and how even though I am a Personal Trainer and in (tooting my own horn) great shape, I am easily intimidated by "manland" in our gym. I have told you about how there is a women's only area (I call it vagina land) and the rest of the gym (manland) where mostly men workout. We have been going to this particular gym since Ava was 5 weeks old. So about 13 months. In those 13 months, I have NEVER worked out in Manland. I have taken spin classes on the Spin floor, but never have I ventured to workout out there. I am easily intimidated. Crazy I know. In my last post, I talked about needed a challenge or goal and getting lonely working out by myself. I needed that extra push to get to my full workout potential.
Clint's usual workout partner is in a "not really wanting to workout slump." SCORE FOR ME! Let me backup and say that Clint and I have worked out together in the same room, but have NEVER worked out in the same routine together. So I thought I would at least ask him what he thought about us working out together yesterday. He said he had actually thought earlier in the day about doing that! Crazy how that works!
So we dropped Ava off at kidcare and I gathered my courage and we went back to the dreaded manland! We still have to get used to each other and workout habits, but it was actually the best lifting session I have had in a long time! We did chest, triceps, and abs.
Skull crushers EZbar+10lbs 3x12
Pushups 2x10
Superset: Bench Press Bar+10lbs 3x10
and Butterflys 10lb DBs 3x10
Abs-Roman Chair 50x
Assisted Dips 3x10
Pushups 3x10
I loved it! I loved spending time with him. I loved pushing my self, because let's face it, I had to impress my man!! haha I loved doing something with him that is my passion and that he is getting back in to. Him losing 29lbs really re-engergized his want to be in the gym. No complaints here!
I am extremely sore this morning, which I love too, but I can't wait to get to workout with him again. Oh and my manland fear is conquered. I will limit my usage of vagina land and frequent the big girl weights! I am going to start lifting heavy again and really appreciate what my body can do. I am allowed to run a mile every other day for a week and then SLOWLY increase my mileage and days I run. Today means run day and additional cardio! Super excited!
Have you conquered any fears lately??
Have a great day!!

Been a while
Hey there! I hope everyone is fine and dandy.
A lot has been going on at the Ferrell house. We have been renovating like crazy. We made ourselves a goal to have everything done by October 15th and then we would call our realtor to come back out ant put out house on the market. It is amazing all of the things you find that need to be updated! Sheesh. Plus its $20 here, $50 there! Those little bills are adding up! But they are things that needed to be done.
I have been spinning in classes or on my own when there isn't a class going on. I would love it if our gym had a early morning spin class. Maybe I could get my instructor license and have the gym create a class for me! Hmmm now there is a thought!
Ava has been teething and it has been her worst teething experience yet. Fever, runny nose. I think her incisors and bottom(whatever they are called) are coming in all at once! Poor baby! I wonder why God made teething painful for them. Its not like they can tell us what is wrong or what they need.
This past Saturday was hard for me. I had to miss out on the Nashville Women's 1/2 Marathon. I did go get my race packet on Friday, but I couldn't go through the expo because I was fighting back tears. The entire "race time" on Saturday morning I kept thinking, "I would be about so and so miles in" "I would be eating a GU chomp about now," "I would be crossing the finish line about now." Alas, it was rough. Because of my back injury in August and not being able to run, I decided, even though I have no pain in daily activities, I would not do the 1/2. I am still not running, so that it my bulging disc continues to heal and I don't reinjure it.
I'm thinking I will try and jog in a few weeks to see how things are going. Until then it is spinning and weights.
Work has been crazy. It has now taken me 2.5 hours to type this post! Busy is good though. It makes the day go by so much quicker!!
What has been going on in your neck of the woods??
Have a great day!

Hip(or so I thought) diagnosis
Wow it seems like eons since I have written a post. In all honesty, I have been avoiding my blog and my google reader like the plague. It makes me sad to read about everyone's workouts and runs. Why do you ask?
Well, remember my hip post. Not a "cool" post but hip as in on my body. Well, it started as hip bursitis and has moved to my back and continued to get worse. I haven't been able to run in 2 weeks. My boss/chiropractor has been adjusting me and has done some ultrasound treatments on my and my bursitis healed right up. My back on the other hand has not, if not worse.
Symptoms:
So, that's what I am going to do. My boss/chiropractor "says" he can knock it out in 7-10 days. It has already been 2 weeks. So, we will go from there. I am still going to do no exercise until I can walk without pain. When that happens I will go to the pool and elliptical unless there is pain.
I had signed up a few months ago for a half marathon Sept 24 and another one Oct 8. I had already accepted that I would be eating that money and not running. I am still not 100% sure I will be running those races even though this injury can be fixed faster than a stress fracture, but there is a sliver of hope.
Have you ever had a bulging disc?
How did it affect you?
Would you run in the races?
Have a great day!
Symptoms:
- CAN NOT WALK without a limp because of the horrible pain in my lower back/butt area.
- Sometimes if I move a certain way, it feels like I am getting stabbed in that area and my leg wants to give out.
- I have radiating pain down my right leg and sometimes in my lower butt/groin area.
- Sitting gets uncomfortable.
- Putting weight on my right leg(putting pants on) IMPOSSIBLE.
- Sleeping in any direction is sometimes painful and always uncomforable.
I went to a bone and joint doctor today. I have suspected a sacral stress fracture all along. I KNEW something wasn't right when it a) wasn't getting better in 2 weeks of doing nothing but daily life b)it didn't feel like a muscle problem c)Ibuprofen didn't seem to help. I stopped taking it after a week of no relief.
I had done all of the research on a stress fracture. I seemed to have ALL of the signs and symptoms. I was prepared to be told I would be on crutches and it would take months to recover let alone no running!
My boss called and got me an appt where they could work me in today.
I got an xray of all views of my back and waited on the doc. He asked me some questions and made me do some stretches.
Diagnosis:
LUMBAR BULGING DISK. Huh? WHAT? I was not prepared for that. He told me to rest and gave me a prescription for an anti-inflammatory. He said I could swim or do the elliptical, unless it hurt. As soon as I got to the office I HAD to do some research!
- What is a bulging disk ?
It's a disk whose edge is bulging into the spinal canal ,where the nerves traverse to theforamina. This can be produced by swelling of the nucleus, diminishing of the intervertebral space, etc. In most cases is asymptomatic and it is merely a radiological finding. But if this bulge is big enough it will impinge the nerves, giving the symptoms and signs of a herniated disk and for practical purposes it has to be considered as such.http://www.trejos.com/Trejos/faqHDL.stm#2
- What are the symptoms?
- What are the treatments?

Oh, my hip!
It has been HEC.TIC at work lately and the only time I can blog is at work. Funny huh?!?! Well, the biggest news is that I have hip bursitis. Last week, my leg started bothering me and I shortened my runs so I wouldn't injure myself bad. Wednesday, I decided to run from home because it was overcast and the temp had dropped some....to 90 degrees haha! So, on my run I went. I was feeling pretty good, but slow about a mile in. My first mile is NEVER fun for me. By the 2 mile turn around I was really slow and favoring my hip. By 2.25 miles I was limping. I swallowed my pride and called Clint to come pick me up. I was almost 2 miles from home and was in NO shape to get there any time soon! I felt defeated and irritated that he had to come get me, but proud that I called him. The next morning I could barely walk. Hip bursitis reared its ugly ugly head

What is hip bursitis?
(Source)
"There are two major bursae of the hip, the trochanteric bursa and the ischial bursa. Inflammation of either can be associated with stiffness and pain around the hip joint. The trochanteric bursa is located on the side of the hip. It is separated significantly from the actual hip joint by tissue and bone."
What causes hip bursitis?
"Most commonly, bursitis is a noninfectious condition (aseptic bursitis) caused by inflammation resulting from local soft tissue trauma or straininjury. On rare occasions, the hip bursa can become infected with bacteria. This condition is called septic bursitis. Although uncommon, the hip bursa can become inflamed by crystals that deposit there from gout orpseudogout."
What are hip bursitis symptoms?
"Trochanteric bursitis frequently causes tenderness of the outer hip, making it difficult for patients to lie on the involved side, frequently causing difficult sleep. Trochanteric bursitis also causes a dull, burning pain on the outer hip that is often made worse with excessive walking or stair climbing. The ischial bursa is located in the upper buttock area. Ischial bursitis can cause dull pain in this area that is most noticeable when climbing uphill. The pain sometimes occurs after prolonged sitting on hard surfaces, hence the names "weaver's bottom" and "tailor's bottom."
Bursitis of the hip is the most common cause of hip pain."
What is the treatment for hip bursitis?
"The treatment of any bursitis depends on whether or not it involves infection. Noninfectious or aseptic hip bursitis can be treated with ice compresses, rest, and anti-inflammatory and pain medications. Occasionally, it requires aspiration of the bursa fluid. This procedure involves removal of the fluid with a needle and syringe under sterile conditions. It can be performed in the doctor's office. Sometimes the fluid is sent to the laboratory for further analysis. Frequently, there is inadequate fluid accumulation for aspiration. Noninfectious hip bursitis can be treated with an injection of cortisonemedication, often with an anesthetic, into the swollen bursa. This is sometimes done at the same time as the aspiration procedure.
Patients with hip bursitis can often benefit by weight reduction, stretching exercises, and wearing proper footwear for exercise activities. Sometimes physical-therapy programs can be helpful. Generally, patients should avoid hills and stairs and direct pressure on the affected hip (sleep on the other side), when possible, while symptoms are present. Affected people should also avoid exercising on inclined surfaces and stairs, especially running hills, until symptoms have resolved.
Septic bursitis (rare in the hip) requires even further evaluation by a doctor. This is unusual in the hip bursa but does occur. The bursal fluid can be examined in the laboratory to identify the precise bacteria causing the infection. Septic bursitis requires antibiotic therapy, often intravenously. Repeated aspiration of the infected fluid may be required. Surgical drainage and removal of the infected bursa sac (bursectomy) may also be necessary."
What is the prognosis for hip bursitis?
"Usually hip bursitis responds completely to conservative treatments. Either oral or injectable anti-inflammatory medications frequently resolve the symptoms within a week. Infectious bursitis must be cured with antibiotic treatment often with surgical drainage."
I am no going on Day 5 without a run. To be honest, I am cranky and irritable. Running is my stress releiver, my time to let life go, my time to be me. Not a mama, wife, sister, or daughter, but ME! It is the only hour I ask for and without that I am struggling!!! I am getting treatment for it at work and today is the first day I can walk without a limp, but I am still only about 65%. A few more days and I hope to get my running shoes back on. Although, I do need new tennies. The average miles on running shoes is 300-350 miles and then you get new ones. I hit 478 miles last week on the same shoes. Um, yeah I have over ran my shoes!
Have you had to deal with an injury?
How did you cope?

12 month checkup
First of all, if you have kids. Be prepared if you make your appointment in August! Schools start back and EVERY kid and their mama wait until the LAST MINUTE to do well checks and shots! It was a mad house! Luckily we had an appointment, but we still had to wait about 45 minutes. Oh and how come the "well" waiting room is the size of a closet, but the "sick" waiting room is ginormous?!?! That is just beyond me!
We were finally called back and Ava toddled/ran(yes she is practically running!!) on to the room. The nurse did the usual questionaire and then we dropped her clothes and headed over to do her weight, height, and head circumference.
We were finally called back and Ava toddled/ran(yes she is practically running!!) on to the room. The nurse did the usual questionaire and then we dropped her clothes and headed over to do her weight, height, and head circumference.
Height: 26.5in
Weight: Almost 18lbs
Head circumference:um can't remember, but it is normal.
Dr. Jay came in and Ava was roaming all over the place. She grinned at him, as to say, "look at me, I'm walking." But liking Dr. Jay came to a screeching halt! Once he started doing his examine, she was not having it! Did not like it and made sure he knew it. After that fun was over, we let her play while we had doctor/parent talk. He is ecstatic with her development and everything is functioning perfectly. BUT her percentiles have dropped from 25th to 3rd. He isn't so much concerned yet, but wants us to come back in 6 weeks to do a weight check to see if she is putting on weight. She can practically have all foods now that she has hit the 12 month mark (WITHIN MAMA'S REASON!) The only things he doesn't want her having yet are peanut/peanut butter and honey. He wants us to add about 25% of whole milk to her bottles to up her caloric intake and boost her calories at meal times.
To be honest, I struggled with this. I have been blessed to be able to breastfeed for over 12 months and that was my initial goal. Apparently, I have skim milk in these here parts of mine and need to add some calories in to my girl's belly. My "selfish" concern is that this will start her weaning process. I know it is the natural order of things, BUT breastmilk is the thing that I ALONE can give her. Once that is over, so is that need from me and honestly that is hard for me to deal with. I know in my head I should be so happy I have made it past my goal of 12 months, but I am selfish! Yes, I said it. Selfish. Yes, breastmilk is the best thing for her (in my opinion), but for me I am needed where NO ONE else can fill that need.
OK rant over. She had to get 3 shots and her little finger pricked on top of teething! She had a rough day!!
We decided not to go to the gym, since the doctor visit was no fun for any of us. I was bummed, but I got in a weights session at work, so at least I got my heart rate up some.
Locomotions 3x20 2-15#DBs
Lying Chest Press 3x10 2-15#DBs
Lying Overhead pullovers 3x10 1-15#DB
Isolated Bicep curls 3x10 2-15#DBs
Leg lifts 3x10
Flutters 3x30sec
I am hoping to get in a good run this afternoon, but we shall see. Becoming a mama has taught me to NEVER make concrete plans!!
Have a great day!

Decision!
Happy Friday!
It has been one of those weeks where I haven't been sure what day it was!
So, the name of this post is "Decision". Here goes the reason with a little backtrackin'.
When Ava was born, I decided I would try to breastfeed and stick it out. Even when I wanted to quit, even when my nipples felt like they would fall off, even when my boobs got hard as rocks. I WOULD stick it out! I did! Has it been easy? Yes and no. Is it a COMPLETE sacrifice? YES!, BUT it is totally and completely worth it and I wouldn't trade it for the world!
I went in to breastfeeding wanting to try at least a year, but I wasn't sure that my body or Ava would be up for this, so I took it one day at a time.
Ava will be a year old on the 31st! Yes, a year! It has FLOWN by! I felt like I was pregnant for 26 months, but this year of Ava's life has gone by in a blink!
My body has done wonderfully well with breastfeeding. It has been the BEST experience for me. I love the intimacy that comes with being able to feed my child! I love the responsibility that comes with being able to feed my child. Our bodies are amazing things and can do amazing things.
It has been the BEST thing I could/can do for Ava and her health and development. She has had one cold the entire year of her life! I wholeheartedly chalk it up to breastmilk and the amazing qualities it has.
I am a COMPLETE advocate of breastfeeding. Having said that, I KNOW that it is not for everyone. Each mama has the right to that decision and I totally respect that!
My big decision is to keep breastfeeding after her birthday! Yeppers, I am going to keep at it. Ava still gets solid natural foods. The only thing processed she gets are CHEERIOS and the OCCASIONAL lick of ice cream. This has what has worked best for us, but especially Ava.
I am definitley stopping breastfeeding no longer that her being 18 months old or when she embarrasses me in public asking for boobage! Which ever comes first!!!
Thoughts? Do you think it is weird to go that long? Would you if you could?

Wednesday
Hey there on this Hump Day!
Yesterday was my day off of the week. I took Ava to my parent's house and then went to the gym to run. I knocked out 6.10 miles in 53:40 min! Heck yeah! My times are getting faster and faster. Maybe one day I will be like Melissa aka the Cheetah! Until then, I am enjoying my improvements. I sweated buckets upon buckets on that run though! This is gross, but I had to wipe down the part of the mill in front of your feet. I had drops of Courtney on there! Yuck! After the gym, I had an eye exam appt. I have been getting headaches and I noticed I get blurry vision when I look far off. After months of badgering by my loving husband, I bit the bullet and went. I have a slight nearsightedness and need to wear glasses when I drive, when it rains, or anytime I will be looking a far distance. They are actually really cute. They are PURPLE! I get them next week and will post a pic of me in them. I really had nothing to do after that and DID NOT NEED TO SPEND MONEY, so I texted my mom to see if I could go hang out with them at their house. I was fun hanging out with my mom, dad, brother and sis and of course my fabulous offspring. Speaking of, did you check out the Florida pics? Anywho, my fam is fun, but so LOUD! Italian genes HAVE to be somewhere in my lineage! I so appreciate mine and Clint's household after spending a couple hours over there!!
How are your workouts going this week?
Do you enjoy spending time with your fam?
Have a great day!

Seriously?!
I.HAVE.STREP.THROAT!!
SERIOUSLY?!
Let's back up. Sunday late afternoon my throat was a little scratchy. I felt a headache creepin in on me. By Sunday night, I couldn't swallow, my head was pounding, like an imaginary man using a jackhammer on it. The back of my neck started hurting. I completely freaked with the neck symptom and Googled the heckers beckers out of Meningitis, sore throats, migraines, well every symptom I had. After putting Ava down for the count, I tapped out too and went to bed. I woke up when my alarm went off at 4am. I turned it off! Yep, there was no way I was going to be able to function at work. I got up at 5am because my extremely (for me) endowed boobs needed pumping. Clint kept insisting I go to the doc. I.AM.STUBBORN! I don't like to take meds because "this too shall pass." After some bickering back and forth, (at 5:15am, haha) I told Clint he got mean when I get sick. He looked at me and said, (I'm paraphrasing here) "I want you to get better. You have been getting headaches and these symptoms hit you fast. I've kind of gotten used to you being around and want to keep it that way." This got a hearty smile and a chuckle from me. Boy, how I love this man. So, I surrendered. Sinve I don't go to the doc, except my OB/GYN, I had to find out a doc in our insurance plan and see if they accepted new patients. Of course, its only 6am by now and doc's don't open until 8am. At 8am on the nose I called. I scored an appt for 2pm! Ugh! But at least I can get in. I started to feel a little better, I cleaned house, folded laundry and spent time with Ava. I took her to my parent's house around lunch so I could come back home to shower and get to my appt.
I did all of the new patient paperwork and insurance stuff and they called me back. This adorably pregnant nurse took my vitals.
Blood pressure=on low side of normal.
Temp.=98.6
Weight=back down from the few I gained in the last couple weeks of training eating tooooo much Peanut Butter.
The doc came in and did the checkup. The nurse did a throat swab, YUCK!
Diagnosis=very positive for Strep throat!!!
So, I started a Z-pak and they gave me gross-a@@-nasty throat soother. I should be back to normal in a day or so.
Yesterday, was supposed to be my 1st day of 10k training and I was going to use my new Mama's day gift!
That didn't happen, nor will it today, although today is a REST day!! Score.
Have you just randomly gotten sick before??
This was out of left field!!!
h
have a great day.

My 1st "postrace blues"
Thank you for all of the nice comments about my 1st Half Marathon. It was such an amazing experience! I wish I could bottle all of those feelings and emotions. Speaking of emotions, yesterday I was definitely down in the dumps aka "postrace blues". You know...when there is so much focus on training and the countdown to "the day". It gets here, you run and feel amazing after and even the next day. But then the high is gone and now you are left feeling lost and now what?!? (this can be for any event, i.e. graduation, wedding, postbaby)
I took 2 much needed days off from working out and had planned to start back yesterday. My thoughts (negative ones)were all over the place. Tuesdays are my day off during the week and have become house cleaning, gym time alone, and errand days. I dropped Ava off at my parent's house and went back home to clean and wallow in my pity party for one! I had COMPLETELY talked myself out of going to the gym.
-It was raining.
-It was chilly outside.
-I was getting out just to go to the gym.
-I didn't feel like going.
-I'm not "training" this week.
-I "feel" puffy.
Plenty of reasons not to go. Right?!
Well, my pity party came to a screeching halt and I made myself get out of my sweats and head to the gym whether I wanted to or not.
Cardio:
Elliptical 15 min.
Treadmill: 1 SLOOOOOOOW A@@ Mile and walked 5 min. (I felt like such a newbie. I was kind of beating myself up because I struggled through that mile. ) I got off and went to lift weights. I have been neglecting them just because running has been my priority. Not anymore. My plan is to start "training" again running on Monday and doing full body lifting with heavy weights 3 days a week.
Weights:
Squats 2x20 Barbell 5kg each side
Incline chest press 2x20 12lbs DBs
Deadlift/row combo 2x20 Barbell 5kg each side
Bicep curls 2x12 12lbs DBs
Stationary lunges 2x20/side Barbell 5kg each side
Tricep kickbacks 2x12 12lbs DB
I felt like a slacker. I felt like I didn't/couldn't push myself. I felt lost!
On my drive to my parents's house to pick up Ava, I had a chitty chat with myself.
"Courtney! You just ran your 1st half marathon. 13.1 MILES! Do you reallize what an amazing feat that is?! Your body took a tole and is just getting back to normal. You can start Monday training for your 10k in June. Relax and ease back into working out this week.
So you gained a couple (a couple) of L.B.S's at the end of training! You will lose those in NO TIME. Focus and get back on track! You have 40 days until the BEACH! Quit beating yourself up for NO REASON! You are so blessed and your family is so proud of you! "
Yes ma'am!!!!
Have you ever experienced the "postrace blues?"
Do you have chats with yourself?
Have a great day!

Making a list and checking it......off!
What a morning!!! We had bad storms last night and our power went out about 1am. By the way, when you become a mama, your creative juices HAVE to flow otherwise you won't make it. Hence, the funny/creative thing this morning. I woke up at 4am to still no power. Um, my boobs are HUGE and HURTING. What am I going to do?!?! Aha! I went to tell Clint to listen for Ava if she cries. I grabbed my pump, my phone, a flashlight, and my yogurt/cottage cheese breakfast and went TO MY MURANO TO PUMP! It was 4:15am and I am in the car pumping! How hysterical is that?! Hey, where there is a will there is a way right?!
Well, I do have other news. My boss(a chiropractor) came to me and said he was going to start closing the office on Tuesdays so he can go out to the community for meetings and speaking events as well as "save his back." The whole time I am thinking......what does that mean for me? Wellllll, they are putting me on salary and I can work from home or not on Tuesdays! Heck yeah! Clint and I were just talking about gas and mileage on our Murano. One whole day saved on gas! When would this be put into effect? Yesterday!
Let's back up a bit to Monday's workout. I indeed did decide to run outside like I thought I would. We went to the gym and I ran in the neighborhood behind it. Boyo, that 1st mile was a b@atch. I thought this is NOT looking good. Plus I had borrowed my mom's MP3 player because my phone was low on battery. The songs my brother had put on there for her were HORRENDOUS! I could not get a song that allowed any kind of consistent pace until toward the end. I played that song over and over until I was finished.
4.25miles in 45 minutes.
Since I had yesterday "off" I was still going to let my mom watch Ava so I could run and get some things done. Plus Tuesday's are my mom's Bible Study class and those ladies love Ava being there!
I texted my running buddy Eva to see if she wanted to get out Long Run over with for the week. We decided on 10ish and headed out at 8am to the perfect running neighborhood she had found. (Portapotty included)
We got to about 2.5 miles and she was just feeling "off." We walked to 4.10miles and then she "made" me go ahead and finish our run. She walked while I cranked out 6.33miles in 58minutes! Super happy with this!
Total yesterday was 10.43 miles. Dang it! Almost 10.5miles. Oh well! I went home and showered and prepared my to-do list for the day.
To-do list:
Pump twice before I pick up Ava.
Eat.
Wash Sheets.(loving the new dryer.)
Put clean sheets on the bed.
Dust the house.
Vacuum the house.
Clean bathrooms. (I loathe this!)
Wash shower curtain and bathroom rugs.
Empty/fill our new dishwasher.
Sweep.
Fold/put away laundry. I think I did 5 loads total.
Fold and put away Ava's clothes.
Clean the kitchen countertops.
I think that's it! (haha) Everything checked off and done! This is weird but there is something gratifying about checking off your list and see the progress on paper as well as a clean house! Good stuff. That doesn't mean that our house won't be "lived in" in the next couple of days, but for yesterday it was spic and span!
Do you like cleaning?
I get into cleaning mode where I am balls to the wall(like yesterday) and that is every few days I guess.
What chore do you loathe?
Bathrooms!
Are you working out today?
I am taking a rest day. 14ish miles in 2 days deserves a rest day. We are going to go out and about after we get home to look for Clint some pants and a shirt for Easter. (maybe me some new shoes!!!!)
Have a great day!

Sleep training.
Hey lovelies! I hope your week continues to be on the good side! I mean it is the day before FRIDAY!
Yesterday, at the gym, I did a PR! Yes ma'am I knocked out 4.5miles in 40 min! That is an average of 8:38min mile! I didn't plan on doing this, but Clint said his workout would take about 45 min and I HATE keeping him or anyone for that matter waiting on me. My training plan had 4.5miles for the day, so I thought, "you better get to gettin on that thing." Gettin' I did! Sweating was had! I felt great. The achilles is a little sore this morning, but nothing a little ice won't help!
Ava news:
Mission: Moving Ava's crib into her bedroom and attempt sleep training.
I have been on the fence between the "cry it out method" and the "no tears method" for some time. It was either piss or get off the pot and last night we went through with it.
First off, what is the "cry it out method'?
According to Baby Center, "People often think this method of sleep training involves leaving babies alone to cry for as long it takes before they fall asleep. But "cry it out" (CIO) simply refers to any sleep training approach — and there are many — that says it's okay to let a baby cry for a specified period of time (often a very short period of time) before offering comfort."
I have had mixed feelings about this. After much research, we decided to give this a try. If it doesn't work, there are many other options.
How do you put the CIO method into effect?
Step 1
Put your baby in his crib when he's sleepy but still awake.
Step 2
Say goodnight to your child and leave the room. If he cries when you leave, let him cry for a predetermined amount of time. (See "How long should I leave my child alone?" below.)
Step 3
Go back into the room for no more than a minute or two to pat and reassure your baby. Leave the light off and keep your voice quiet and soothing. Don't pick him up. Leave again while he's still awake, even if he's crying.
Step 4
Stay out of the room for a little bit longer than the first time and follow the same routine, staying out of the room for gradually longer intervals, each time returning for only a minute or two to pat and reassure him, and leaving while he's still awake.
Step 5
Follow this routine until your child falls asleep when you're out of the room.
Step 6
If your child wakes up again later, follow the same routine, beginning with the minimum waiting time for that night and gradually increasing the intervals between visits until you reach the maximum for that night.
Step 7
Increase the amount of time between visits to the nursery each night. In most cases, according to Ferber, your baby will be going to sleep on his own by the third or fourth night — a week at the most. If your child is very resistant after several nights of trying, wait a few weeks and then try again.Source
So, how did our 1st night's attempt go?
About 7:15ish, Ava started getting to be Cranky pants McGee. Clint went and changed her diaper and then brought her to me to nurse before bed. I let her get almost asleep after nursing and then we both took her to her room and layed her in her crib, patting her back and saying "sweet nothings" to her. We left the room and shut the door. Crying started. We decided to go in every 5, 10, 20 minutes to soothe her without picking her up and stay only about a minute each time. We alternated taking turns at each interval to know we were both there for her, but it was time for bed.
How did we cope? Clint started folding laundry, he doesn't normally do this haha and I got a snack while avoiding eye contact with him in fear I would cry. Leaving her after a minute each time is hard folks, but you know what? She was asleep in 30 minutes. She woke back up around 11pm-ish and Clint went in and did the same reassuring. After 20 minutes, she was back asleep. She woke up at 3am(I have been up since then btw!) and I nursed her and put her back in bed. After 10 minutes she was back asleep again!
After our first night's attempt at crying it out, I can say yes, it was awful hearing her cry and there was a limit to how hard we would let her cry that we had predetermined, but all in all I think it went well. It might be a fluke and tonight could be horrendous, but we will keep at this until it works or doesn't. If it doesn't we will try the other options.
How did/are planning to "sleep train" or are you?
Experiences?
Working out today? I have I think 4.5miles on my plan, but I haven't decided if I will run those miles or do the Elliptical for some cross-training. I will decide when I get closer to time I guess.
Have a great day!!!

Oh boy
Hidey! How about Monday was 80 degrees and today's high 40's. Come onnnn Mother Nature, get it together. It is SPRING! At least, we don't have snow like some parts of the country (sorry y'all). For that I am thankful.
So yesterday was a rest day! Convenient too! I am fighting a calf/achilles "injury". It started bothering me on my Monday run with Eva. I chalked it up to randomness. Tuesday it started off bothering me and then getting better, but after my run......aye carumba, it hurt to walk. I iced, iced, iced that sucker!
My pain is where the top lightening bolt is.

After much thinking over all of my schooling and researching my Doctorate in GOOGLE, I self-diagnosed myself with Stage 1-2 achilles tendonitis.
What is achilles tendonitis?
The Achilles Tendon is the large tendon running from the calf muscles (the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles) located in the back of the leg to the back of the heel. This muscle and tendon combination is responsible for allowing your foot to push off the ground when you're walking, running, and jumping.
Here are the stages from Achilles tendon.com

This muscle and tendon combination is responsible for allowing your foot to push off the ground when you're walking, running, and jumping.
Because it's used so much in gait, the tendon is susceptible to injury. In the earliest stages, the tendon becomes inflamed. At this point we would name the problem "Achilles Tendinitis", because adding the suffix -itis to the end of a word means that tissue is inflamed. |
The four stages, or grades, are:
- Stage 1. No pain during exercise, but there is some discomfort in the morning when first getting out of bed. The stiffness and creaking go away after a few minutes and are fine the rest of the day. Lightly pinching the Achilles tendon with the forefinger and thumb in the morning or after exercise will probably indicate soreness.
- Stage 2. Pain during exercise or running, but performance is not affected. The stiffness and creaking continue to appear when first getting out of bed and continue to disappear shortly afterward. Lightly pinching the Achilles tendon with the forefinger and thumb in the morning or after exercise will indicate soreness.
- Stage 3. Pain during exercise or running that is detrimental to performance. The stiffness and creaking continue to appear when first getting out of bed, but may continue for some time and reappear at other points during the day. Lightly pinching the Achilles tendon with the forefinger and thumb in the morning or after exercise will indicate soreness.
- Stage 4. Hurts too much to exercise or run. The stiffness and creaking continue to appear when first getting out of bed, but may continue for most of the day. Lightly pinching the Achilles tendon with the forefinger and thumb at almost any time of day will indicate soreness.
*I am between 1 and 2.
How did this happen?
Sometimes Achilles Tendinitis is a result of sudden trauma, as you might encounter from playing sports, but you can also have Achilles tendon pain as a result of small, unnoticed, day-to-day irritations that inflame the tendon over time by a cumulative effect. In those with no history of trauma, Achilles Tendonitis is sometimes associated simply with long periods of standing.
There are several factors that can cause the gradual development of Achilles Tendinitis. Improper shoe selection, particularly using high heels over many years, increases your odds of developing the condition. This is because high-heeled shoes cause your calf muscles to contract, leaving the tendon with a lot less slack in it.
Inadequate stretching before engaging in athletic or other physically-demanding activities also predisposes you to develop the problem. This is especially true in "weekend athletes", individuals who tend to partake in excessive physical activities on an intermittent basis.
It is more common in the middle-aged, the out-of-shape, smokers, and in those who use steroids. Men get the condition more frequently than women.
Those involved in jumping and high-impact sports are particularly vulnerable.
*I started doing hills! I probably need to be fitted for proper shoes. I added mileage. I am a perfect candidate!!
Treatment:
Complete rest is vital, and ice is of great help the first 2 days of the injury. (Apply ice 15 minutes every hour). Taping, padding, heel lifts, anti-inflammatory medications, immobilization, physiotherapy, massage, shoe modifications are all helpful in the acute stage.
So, this is what I am doing. Ice, ice, ice. Rested yesterday and today for sure. I will play each day by ear. I am lucky to work for a Chiropractor. Yesterday, I was able to get Electrical muscle stimulation with ice. Today, I got some Ultrasound muscle treatment and our massage therapist worked on me! I think hope I got this injury before it bit me good and hard and I can resume my running soon! I am already itching! Crazy. I think it is also because I know I shouldn't/can't run that has me itching like a dog with fleas! (Nice visual huh?!) My running partner, Eva, texted me earlier and said her and another friend were running 10 miles and I told her how jealous I was! If you would have told me I would have been jealous of someone for running 10 miles just 2 months ago, I would have chuckled in your face! It is amazing how fast I have become addicted.
Questions:
Have you been fitted for shoes? Worth it?
Ever had achilles problems?
Have a great day! Run a little extra for me, pu pu please!!
P.S. For all its worth, I get to spend extra time with Clint and Ava!!!!!
